Why Blog?

It has been said that writers are artists. Hence, as artists, we like to find different ways to express ourselves. In our case, our way of expression comes in the form of written text.

I would like all of you to be artists with the freedom to express yourselves in any way that you would like. Every Monday morning, I will post the topic for you to write about. Once you have read my topic, you will need to write your responses on your own blog. Your responses ought to be 2-3 paragraphs in length, but you should not spend more than 30 minutes writing them. Be sure to title each blog entry with "Topic #__:" and then your own title.

Next, you will need to comment on your classmates' blogs. Each student needs to leave a 2-3 sentences comment on two other students' blogs in order to receive credit per week.

Your responses and comments will need to be completed by 5:00 p.m. every Friday. There will be no exception! Therefore, plan on completing this assignment before the Friday deadline in order to ensure that you receive full credit, which will be 10 points for each week. I will be leaving a comment on each blog I read to indicate to you that I have read your blog.

On a final note, these blogs are intended to be fun and to allow you to display your creativity. Be adventurous and express yourselves! Although we may occasionally use some of your blog entries for grammar practice, these blogs are primarily focused on content. Therefore, have fun!

Topic #5: Which Language?

If you could be instantly fluent in one other language that you currently do not read or speak, which would it be and why?  This has to be a language that you do not know at ALL.

Although I really debated on selecting Arabic or Chinese, I finally decided on Hebrew.  I had studied Hebrew for a few weeks, but all that I learned several years ago died.  Hence, I can honestly say that I really do not know this language.  I am very interested because there are many historical writings in this language.  I personally am interested in reading those texts, which is why I chose Hebrew.  If I were given two additional language options, I would probably select Arabic and Chinese. :o)

How about you?  Which language would you select?

  1. I think Hebrew is a great choice. I hear that it is so difficult to learn, but rewarding to know. Wouldn't it be great to just wake up one day, skip the pain of learning it, and simply KNOW what you're looking at?

  2. Hebrew is very similar to Arabic. Both are semitic languages and have common roots. There are also a lot of similarities in vocabulary, phonetics and grammar.Yet, they do not use the same alphabet;therefore, in writting they are quite different. They also have many words that are similar between the two languages. for example,English (Jewish), Hebrew(Yehudi), Arabic (Yahudi).

  4. Why don't you choose Chinese, Prof.May? In my opinion, because you know Korean and Korean apparently borrowed directly from Chinese, I think you should choose Chinese.
